why
to make beautiful things for readers
"we live only to discover beauty. all else is a form of waiting." — kahlil gibran
we are readers and want to make things for readers
we find that people who care about books and reading tend to be people who care about clothes, homes, architecture, art, design, cinema, gardens... the list goes on. readers are attuned to meaning whether its on a page or in an object
yet so many things designed for readers amount to consumeristic gimmicks or artless slogans. this misses what readers appreciate, which are the qualities of a good book: subtlety, beauty and qualityÂ
to make time to read
“reading and sauntering and lounging and dozing, which i call thinking, is my supreme happiness.” — david humeÂ
the world contrives work and fetishizes exhaustion. rest, pleasure and imagination are demoted from necessity to luxury. reading — which is restful, pleasurable and imaginative — becomes a scarce resource
we try to create things that facilitate, enhance, or find inspiration in reading booksÂ
hence the signature book pocket on our clothes: it is both a practical and symbolic gesture toward finding time to read within the day's little pockets of freedom
it's also why we donate a book for every item we sell through bookaid. they are an amazing international charity who provide tailored reading supplies to where it's needed most
